Beyond the Fence Episode #53

Episode 53, "The Political Status of Guahan and CHamoru Self-Determination"(hosted by Dr. LisaLinda Natividad) airs 2/4/11.

Program guest is Dr. Carlyle Corbin (ccorbinmon@att.net) who is a United Nations advisor and internationally recognized expert on political self-determination. Dr. Corbin is the former minister of state for the external affairs for the US Virgin Islands. He is the author of the United Nations Studies on the participation of non-independent countries in the U.N. system; four books; several book chapters and a number of scholarly papers on related topics. He presented a colloquium on November 30, 2009 at the University of Guam on "Recent Development in Small Island Governance: Implication for the Self-Determination Process." Contested views regarding the U.S. military build-up, which includes the proposed transfer of 10,500 U.S. Marines from Okinawa to the island, are embedded in Guahan’s unresolved political status as an unincorporated territory of the United States, which is akin to that of colony. Guahan remains on the United Nations’ list of Non-Self-Governing Territories--- one of 16 left in the world--- and the island’s native inhabitants, the CHamorus, have still not exercised their inalienable right. Dr. Corbin discusses the nature of this political reality and possibilities for change.
