Ep. 166 “Honoring Veterans by Caring for Veterans”

(hosted by Dr.  Tricia Lizama with production assistance of Marlon Molinos and Joy White) was recorded 11/6/13 and airs 11/8/13.

November 11 is Veterans Day.  In recognition of the growing number of US veterans in Guam, the Northern Marianas and neighboring islands, we feature interviews with two Guam veterans. With an increase of soldiers deploying from the region of Micronesia, the need for services upon their return has increased significantly.  In this episode a Vietnam veteran and a Iraqi Freedom veteran talk about their military experience, assess veterans services, and recommend changes needed to care for veterans in need.

Our guest in the first half of the program is Francisco Lizama (, 72, who joined the Army in 1962  and served active duty until 1970.  He was in Vietnam from 1968-1969.  He received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained when he was hit by an explosive. From 1970-1975, he served as an infantry officer in the Army Reserves.  He is currently a member of the Vietnam Veteran’s Association and the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

In the second half, we talk with Anna Eustaquio(, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran who has served in the Army Reserves since 1989.  She is one of only two females with the rank of E-8 in her unit. Her first deployment was in 2006-2007 to Iraq  when her sons were age 3 and 6.
