Beyond the Fence Episode #31

Episode 31, “Weaving Solidarity: The Art of Filmmaking as an Expression of Support" (hosted by Dr. LisaLinda Natividad) airs Friday, 8/20/10. Featured guests are Jennae Flores and Hermon Farahi, founder of "Artifact" (artifactfilms@gmail.com). an independent research and media production organization, whose mission is to synthesize qualitative social research with documentary media (www.kickstarter.com/projects/psalms133/weaving-solidarity-indigenous-chamorro-movements-a). They have been in the Marianas for the past month to research and document the struggles of the Chamorro people as they confront ongoing militarization and the anticipated impacts of the military buildup. They discuss what motivated them to undertake this project, the philosophical underpinnings of their work and their on-the-ground experience with this stage of research and film-making in the Marianas. See also http://www.vimeo.com/13989552 Pagat Rough Cut for for a segment of their work which also aired on KUAM-TV.

Ms. Flores is a native Chamorro, born and raised on Saipan until the age of 18. She currently resides in Las Vegas, NV, studying Nursing, Bodywork, Yoga, Traditional Medicine and principles of Holistic Healing. She received her BA in Anthropology & Ethnic Studies, with a minor in Dance. This project represents a culmination of a life-long expedition to revive her ancient, pre-colonial Chamorro & Carolinian culture - obscured by 500 years of continual colonization - and to educate others about the cultural tapestry of her people and the contemporary issues they face.

Mr. Farahi is finishing a MA in Anthropology and International Development at The George Washington University (GWU) in Washington DC. He holds an MA Certificate in Documentary Filmmaking from the prestigious Institute for Documentary Filmmaking at GWU. He has conducted fieldwork on refugee and migration issues in North and Sub-Saharan Africa, in addition to researching militarization and indigenous and urban social movements. He is also a musician and photographer.
