Beyond the Fence Episode #30

Episode 30 Fuetsan Famalao'an (Women’s Strength) - Tiningo’ Famalao’an (Women’s Knowledge), Part I (hosted by Dr. Vivian Dames) airs 8/13/10. Fuetsan Famalao'an is a community education and advocacy network mobilized in 2006 in response to the announced plan to relocate US marines from Okinawa to Guam. Tiningo' Famalao'an is a public service campaign, sponsored by Fuetsan Famalao’an, to develop a series of television and radio messages by girls and women to educate the community about the impacts of the proposed military buildup and to promote strategies for island sustainability, the protection of human rights, and the advancement of social and economic justice. The first set of four messages air on KUAM (Channel 8) and Pacific News Center (Channel 7) August 5 through August 20, excluding weekends. These messages will also be broadcast on KPRG FM 89. 3 beginning 8/16/10.

Our program guests are Lisa Cipollone, a member of the steering committee of Fuetsan Famalao'an, together with two women featured in the launch of the Tiningo' Famalao'an series, Tan Juanita Cruz and Lynda Bordallo Aguon. Ms. Cipollone (lisa.cipollone@gmail.com) is a chief of staff at the Guam Legislature and a student majoring in Business Administration - Human Resources at the University of Guam. Tan Juanita Cruz is a widow of a US Army veteran and a suruhana (traditional healer). A former resident of Pagat, she is concerned about diminishing access to medicinal plants and freshwater sources. Lynda Bordallo Aguon (lbaguon@yahoo.com) is the first Chamorro to serve as the Guam (State) Historic Preservation Officer, Historic Resources Division, Department of Parks & Recreation. Ms. Aguon holds a BS degree in Anthropology and History from Portland Sate University and a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Guam.
